Sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) against adolescents is a serious issue prioritized by the WHO recommendations on adolescents sexual and reproductive health and rights. With high prevalence in sub-Saharan Africa and Southern Asia, and deeply rooted in gender inequality, SGBV among adolescents has major health and social consequences. It can lead to an increased risk of unintended pregnancies and induced abortions (often in unsafe conditions), an increased risk of acquisition of HIV and STIs, and adverse mental health outcomes.

Health and Nutrition Advisor @Save the Children
Amal Ben Ameur is a health and nutrition advisor with Save the Children Canada. She has been working on sexual and reproductive health, nutrition, and food security as well as women’s economic empowerment developing programming for over 8 years in sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America. Amal is fluent in 5 languages and loves traveling and discovering new food flavors. She enjoys working with youth groups as she keeps learning every day from their innovation and creative ideas.
Laura Baringer
Project Director, Cyber Rwanda @YLabs
Laura is a public health, gender, and organizational development professional with expertise in sexual and reproductive health, engaging men and boys, and program management and implementation. She has dedicated her career to working at the intersection of health, gender, adolescents and technology, and is passionate about working hand-in-hand with young people to enable them to design solutions to the problems they face day-to-day. She is based in Kigali, Rwanda where she is the project director for CyberRwanda and heads YLabs’ Rwanda office.
