Human-Centered Design in the Context of Social Determinants of Health in Maternity Care: Methods for Meaningful Stakeholder Engagement
The screening process for social determinants of health (SDoH) includes questions regarding life circumstances and barriers to accessing health care. For patients, these questions may be intrusive, biased, and potentially risky. This article describes human-centered design methods to engage birthing parents and health care team members around SDoH screening and referral in maternity care.

Reducing adolescent pregnancy is a global public health priority and enabling contraceptive use is one way to achieve this. Broader determinants of contraceptive use, such as poverty, education and social norms, can affect knowledge, attitudes, motivation and ability to access and use contraception. Structural interventions aim to address these broader determinants and include cash transfer interventions, interventions to encourage participation in school, empowerment interventions and interventions aiming to change social norms. We conducted an evidence synthesis to explore a) what structural interventions have been evaluated for their effect on adolescent contraceptive use in low- and middle-income countries and b) how such interventions may work.

This technical brief presents the case of 9ja Girls, offering lessons for similar ASRH programs seeking to design and implement scalable, sustainable, community-based programming with and for adolescents.

Second, a supplementary asset library provides resources such as editable templates and supporting visuals for select concepts. These assets are a starting point for individuals to adapt existing concepts according to the needs of the communities and stakeholders served.

This report presents perceptions of young men (aged 18 to 24 years) on issues related to family planning in India, Kenya, Mali & Nigeria. Insights presented in this document highlight young men’s experiences, needs and vulnerabilities related to sexual and reproductive health in the four countries. It showcases how participatory design and quantitative approaches have been used to encourage young men to tell their stories and offer personal perspectives on what they care most about. Program implementers, design researchers and other ASRH practitioners would find this document useful, particularly to better understand contextual differences and similarities across select geographies.

This midterm review synthesizes evaluation findings from the design phase of A360 and the first few quarters of implementation (Aug 2016 – Sep 2018), drawing together insights from an ongoing process evaluation, a cost-effectiveness analysis, and the baseline findings from an outcome evaluation. Although the review does not determine the effectiveness of the solutions and therefore A360 as a whole, it finds that the value of the A360 approach is starting to emerge, while also highlighting a number of challenges and trade-offs that the consortium continues to navigate. The MTE’s takeaways are useful for evaluators of HCD and adaptive programs (see page 10), and for donors and future ASRH implementers (see page 49).
