Engaging young people in the design of a sexual reproductive health intervention: Lessons learnt from the Yathu Yathu (“For us, by us”) formative study in Zambia
Meeting the sexual and reproductive health (SRH) needs of adolescents and young people (AYP) requires their meaningful engagement in intervention design. We describe an iterative process of engaging AYP to finalize the design of a community-based, peer-led and incentivized SRH intervention for AYP aged 15–24 in Lusaka and the lessons learnt.

Structural interventions aiming to enable adolescent use of contraception in low- and middle-income countries
Add To FavouritesStructural interventions aiming to enable adolescent use of contraception in low- and middle-income countries
Reducing adolescent pregnancy is a global public health priority and enabling contraceptive use is one way to achieve this. Broader determinants of contraceptive use, such as poverty, education and social norms, can affect knowledge, attitudes, motivation and ability to access and use contraception. Structural interventions aim to address these broader determinants and include cash transfer interventions, interventions to encourage participation in school, empowerment interventions and interventions aiming to change social norms. We conducted an evidence synthesis to explore a) what structural interventions have been evaluated for their effect on adolescent contraceptive use in low- and middle-income countries and b) how such interventions may work.

Integrating Human-Centered Design in a Multidisciplinary Effort to Address Provider Bias: A Summary of the Beyond Bias Experience
Add To FavouritesIntegrating Human-Centered Design in a Multidisciplinary Effort to Address Provider Bias: A Summary of the Beyond Bias Experience
With an aim to expand the knowledge base of application of HCD in global health programs, the Beyond Bias project has documented, in a three-part series, its experience using HCD in a multidisciplinary approach to develop effective, scalable adolescent and youth sexual and reproductive health interventions. The briefs cover programmatic challenges and opportunities, outline salient ideas and concepts that were generated and tested, share key insights on provider bias, and present the finalized intervention design.

Midterm Review of the Adolescents 360 Program
Add To FavouritesMidterm Review of the Adolescents 360 Program
This midterm review synthesizes evaluation findings from the design phase of A360 and the first few quarters of implementation (Aug 2016 – Sep 2018), drawing together insights from an ongoing process evaluation, a cost-effectiveness analysis, and the baseline findings from an outcome evaluation. Although the review does not determine the effectiveness of the solutions and therefore A360 as a whole, it finds that the value of the A360 approach is starting to emerge, while also highlighting a number of challenges and trade-offs that the consortium continues to navigate. The MTE’s takeaways are useful for evaluators of HCD and adaptive programs (see page 10), and for donors and future ASRH implementers (see page 49).

Men Stand Up
Add To FavouritesMen Stand Up
This report presents perceptions of young men (aged 18 to 24 years) on issues related to family planning in India, Kenya, Mali & Nigeria. Insights presented in this document highlight young men’s experiences, needs and vulnerabilities related to sexual and reproductive health in the four countries. It showcases how participatory design and quantitative approaches have been used to encourage young men to tell their stories and offer personal perspectives on what they care most about. Program implementers, design researchers and other ASRH practitioners would find this document useful, particularly to better understand contextual differences and similarities across select geographies.

Aligning Contraception with Family and Life Goals of Married Adolescent Girls in Northern Nigeria: The Case of Matasa Matan Arewa
Add To FavouritesAligning Contraception with Family and Life Goals of Married Adolescent Girls in Northern Nigeria: The Case of Matasa Matan Arewa
This publication captures the journey of Matasa Matan Arewa, an A360 program implemented in Northern Nigeria. The technical brief walks the reader through how this program was designed and implemented to address SRH needs of Nigerian adolescents and promote contraception uptake in a particular community. It first describes the ASRH landscape in Nigeria to explain the need of this intervention, and then offers a step-by-step account of the HCD process used to generate insights from the community and design interventions that speak to adolescents’ aspirations and needs.
