About HCDExchange

The HCDExchange is a knowledge hub and market shaper for driving supply and demand for locally-led human-centered design and Public Health (HCD + Public Health). The hub is a critical country-based and focused actor that spearheads knowledge and engagement around design for health, stimulates workforce development, and provides technical guidance and assistance for country-based public health actors to integrate design into their practice. It is managed within JSI’s Center for Health Information, Monitoring, and Evaluation (CHIME), a technical assistance, research, and knowledge group dedicated to improving the quality of health information and increasing evidence-based decision-making in the health sector. The HCDExchange convenes a global Community of Practice (CoP) that drives, shares, and increases learning to help shape this field. The CoP comprises implementers, funders, designers, evaluators, and youth who share our vision. We focus on low-resource settings, with a particular focus on countries in Africa and Asia.  

The intern will work under the direction and supervision of the HCDExchange Program Manager and collaborate with other HCDExchange team members.

Purpose of the role

As an intern at the HCDExchange, you will have the opportunity to learn and contribute to the new value proposition that seeks to spearhead knowledge and engagement around design for health, stimulate workforce development, and provide technical assistance for country-based public health actors to integrate human-centered design into their practice. The intern will be tasked with supporting the creation of user-centered approaches by understanding business requirements, the voice of the clients, user journeys, customer feedback, and usability findings of the HCDExchange Digital Platforms. In this role, you will work closely with the Program Manager, Community Manager, communications team, Evidence and Metrics Lead, and developers to contribute to implementing the new HCDExchange value proposition. 

This is a full-time internship for 6 months.

Roles and responsibilities

  • Support in designing and developing workforce development and the localization of HCD and Public Health in line with the HCDExchange’s new value proposition. 
  • Work with the Community Manager and Sr. HCD Designer to adopt user-centered design principles to enhance the user experience of the HCDExchange Digital Platform.
  • Support the Senior HCD Designer to continuously plan and conduct user testing to improve the HCDExchange Platform.
  • Assist in generating and managing content on the digital platform to facilitate knowledge exchange and dissemination among HCDExchange Community of Practice members. 
  • Work with the Community Manager and Evidence and Metrics Lead to build and maintain robust community data information systems. 
  • Assist in synthesizing findings, learnings, and insights from project activities. Work with the team to assist with any documentation needed.
  • Support in the preparation of reports and dissemination of results
  • Engage in internal projects, if needed.

Qualifications, skills, and experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Development Studies, Psychology, Public Health, Industrial Design, Interaction Design, or a related field.
  • Recent graduates (undergraduate or postgraduate) seeking experience in HCD and Public Health
  • Ability to engage users through virtual tools. 
  • Ability to multitask and work on different projects. 
  • Comfortable with working openly and transparently, sharing works-in-progress, failures, successes, and lessons learned. 
  • Creative and curious. Voracious learner. Passionate about addressing health issues in low-resource settings. Receptive to and values open and honest feedback from colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Good communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
